Three Magic Words – Nutrition

At Synergy, we’ve been talking a lot about what it takes to be successful in one’s fitness journey – to reach your goals, get the most out of your training, or simply to make it worth your time and money. To me, it all boils to three simple things: Nutrition. Intensity. Consistency. Understand and apply these concepts, and you will be empowered to take your fitness to levels you never dreamed possible. This week, let’s take a look at the first one.

Nutrition

I’ve heard all sorts of formulas spouted off over the years that talk about how fitness is 75% nutrition, 25% training, 60/40, 50/50, etc. All of these are really meaningless. Fitness is 100% of a lot of things, but it must all begin with nutrition. In a sense, nutrition is the one concept that actually transcends fitness training. It’s bigger than CrossFit, Yoga, Bootcamp, or Cycling. It encompasses and effects everything – how you feel, how you sleep, how you think, and even how you move. It is the very foundation of health and wellness from a physiologic standpoint. If your nutrition is on point, you may never pick up a weight in your life and you will still be healthier than most.

It seems that in the gym, nutrition often becomes the hardest area of fitness to tackle. It must be tackled though – first. Unless you train with the volume of a professional CrossFit Games athlete – and none of you do – you simply can’t out-train a crappy diet. Sure, at first you may get stronger or faster…at least for a little while. But at some point, the #gainz will slow down, your progress still stall, and frustration will set in.

The performance, recovery, and yes…even the aesthetic components to being fit (which we all know is the real reason you work out), all begin, depend, and end with your nutrition, plain and simple. We can’t emphasize it enough: nutrition is almost more important than anything.

Begin looking at food as fuel for your lifestyle and your workouts – choosing not only the right foods, but the right amount of them – and watch your fitness take off.
